Folder: 05 - SOURCE MATERIAL Supporting: Water & Frequency

Gerald Pollack — Primary Sources

Pollack, G.H. — The Fourth Phase of Water: Beyond Solid, Liquid, and Vapor (2013) Ebner and Sons Publishers, Seattle. Primary popular science text. Describes EZ water, fourth phase, and biological implications. Note: This is NOT a peer reviewed scientific monograph. Pollack acknowledges the layered structure proposal is speculative.

Pollack, G.H. — Cells, Gels and the Engines of Life (2001) Ebner and Sons, Seattle. Earlier work establishing cell water as gel-like and ordered.

Zheng, J. & Pollack, G.H. (2003) “Long-range forces extending from polymer-gel surfaces” Physical Review E, 68, 031408. First peer reviewed description of the exclusion zone phenomenon. Confirmed: microspheres repelled from hydrophilic surfaces.

Wang, A. & Pollack, G.H. (2024) “Exclusion-zone water inside and outside of plant xylem vessels” Scientific Reports, Vol. 14, Article 12071. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-024-62983-3 Most recent peer reviewed publication. EZ water in plant vessels confirmed.

Chai, B. & Pollack, G.H. (2010) “Solute-free interfacial zones in polar liquids” Journal of Physical Chemistry B, 114, 5371–5375. EZ phenomenon in non-water polar liquids confirmed.

Pollack Lab — University of Washington https://www.pollacklab.org/research Official lab page. Confirms: EZ water fourth phase, infrared energy building EZ, electrical charge separation.

Pollack — TEDx Guelph University “The Fourth Phase of Water” Accessible non-specialist overview.

Prigogine Medal 2012 Awarded to Pollack for contributions to thermodynamics. Institutional recognition confirmed.

Critical Review — Must Read

Elton, D.C. et al. (2020) “Exclusion Zone Phenomena in Water — A Critical Review of Experimental Findings and Theories” International Journal of Molecular Sciences, 21(14): 5041. PMC: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7404113/ Full text: https://arxiv.org/pdf/1909.06822

Key findings:

  • EZ phenomenon confirmed and reproduced by multiple groups
  • Pollack’s H₃O₂ structural explanation NOT in peer reviewed publications — only in his book
  • Schurr diffusiophoresis theory presents compelling alternative explanation for core EZ phenomenon
  • Neutron radiography does NOT support higher density phase
  • EZ phenomenon real. Structural explanation contested.

UNSW Chemistry Professor — The Conversation (2022, updated 2025) “Don’t fall for the snake oil claims of structured water” https://theconversation.com/dont-fall-for-the-snake-oil-claims-of-structured-water-a-chemist-explains-why-its-nonsense-188159

Key points:

  • H₃O₂ formula not in peer reviewed publication — book only
  • Simple arithmetic: converting H₂O to H₃O₂ would release H₂ gas — not observed
  • EZ phenomenon interesting and real
  • Commercial structured water products tested with NMR show no difference from pure water
  • Pollack distances himself from most commercial products
  • Pollack has his own structured water company — conflict of interest worth noting

Important distinction for the vault: EZ phenomenon = verified (reproduced) H₃O₂ structural explanation = not peer reviewed, alternative explanations exist Commercial structured water = snake oil not supported by Pollack’s own peer reviewed work

Infrared Light and Cellular Water

Pollack — Biodiversity for a Livable Climate (2019) https://bio4climate.org/article/water-isnt-what-you-think-it-is-the-fourth-phase-of-water-by-gerald-pollack/ Confirms: all wavelengths UV through infrared build EZ water. Near-infrared most effective. EZ builds spontaneously from environmental energy.

Embryo Blood Flow Experiment Li, Z. & Pollack, G.H. (2021) “On the driver of blood circulation beyond the heart” BioRxiv 20, 160. Note: BioRxiv is a preprint server — not yet peer reviewed at time of citation. Tag: credible → #investigate pending peer review.

EZ Water and Cell Biology

PLOS ONE — Sharma, Pollack et al. (2018) “Exclusion zone and heterogeneous water structure at ambient temperature” https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0195057 Confirmed: three dimensional cell-like structured exclusion zone in water prepared by two methods.

Ball, P. (2017) “Water is an active matrix of life for cell and molecular biology” Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 114: 13327–13335. Confirms: interfacial water near cell membranes behaves differently from bulk water. Mainstream peer reviewed support for the general principle.

Cymatics in Water

Hans Jenny — Cymatics Volumes 1 and 2 (1967, 1974) Basilius Presse, Basel. Original photographic documentation of cymatics in water and other media. Foundational primary source.

Masaru Emoto — Status

The honest position: Emoto’s water crystal work widely cited in frequency wellness sources. Not replicated under blinded conditions. Methodology not peer reviewed at required standard. Do not cite as verified.
