Folder: 01 - THE NATURAL Source note: SRC - Music & Frequency

Why This Note Exists In This Vault

Music is the most direct frequency delivery system humans have ever built.

Not metaphorically. Literally. Music is organised frequency, delivered through the air, received by a body that is 70% water and responds to frequency at the cellular level.

Everything documented in Frequency & Vibration and Cymatics applies to music. Every note played enters the body and runs a cymatic experiment inside your cells.

This makes music the most accessible natural counter available — and explains why the frequency it is tuned to matters more than most people realise.

The Tuning Question

The international standard for musical pitch — A=440 Hz — was established by the International Organisation for Standardisation in 1953. Before this there was no universal standard. Tuning varied widely by region, tradition, and instrument.

Many traditions clustered around A=432 Hz.

The mathematical difference between these two standards:

432 Hz:

  • Relates to the Schumann Resonance through harmonic ratios
  • C at 432 Hz tuning = 256 Hz (2 to the power of 8 — a pure mathematical octave of 1 Hz, the base unit)
  • Generates cymatic patterns that align with natural geometric forms
  • Found in Tibetan singing bowls measured archaeologically
  • Verdi’s preferred tuning — he campaigned formally for 432 Hz as the Italian standard in the 1880s and the Italian government briefly adopted it #verified

440 Hz:

  • Does not share harmonic relationship with the Schumann Resonance
  • Adopted as international standard in 1953
  • Prior to 1953 the BBC and US military had already standardised to 440 Hz during the 1930s and 1940s #verified

The honest position on 432 vs 440: The mathematical relationships favouring 432 Hz are real. Peer reviewed studies specifically comparing physiological responses to identical music at 432 Hz vs 440 Hz are limited. The existing small studies suggest lower heart rate and reduced anxiety at 432 Hz. Larger replication is needed. credibleinvestigate

What Music Does To The Brain

and Body — Documented

Dopamine: Salimpoor et al. (2011) — Nature Neuroscience. Using PET scanning and fMRI, demonstrated that music that produces chills causes dopamine release in the nucleus accumbens — the same reward pathway activated by food and sex. Music is not a luxury. It is a biological reward system trigger. verified

Pain: A meta-analysis of 73 randomised controlled trials (Hole et al., 2015 — The Lancet) found that music listening before, during, and after surgery reduced pain, anxiety, and the need for pain medication. Across 73 trials. Published in The Lancet. verified

Cortisol: Music in a major key at slow tempo measurably reduces cortisol — the stress hormone. Music in a minor key at fast tempo elevates it. The body responds to musical structure chemically, not just emotionally. verified

The Autonomic Nervous System: Slow music (below 60 BPM) shifts the ANS toward parasympathetic dominance. Fast music (above 120 BPM) shifts it toward sympathetic dominance. Heart rate, respiratory rate, and skin conductance all follow musical tempo. The body synchronises with the rhythm it is exposed to. This is called entrainment. verified

Neuroplasticity: Playing music — not just listening — strengthens the corpus callosum (connection between brain hemispheres), develops fine motor control, and increases grey matter density in multiple brain regions. Documented across multiple neuroimaging studies. verified

Entrainment — The Key Mechanism

Entrainment is the tendency of biological oscillators to synchronise with external rhythmic signals.

Your heartbeat, your brainwaves, your respiratory rhythm — all will tend to synchronise with a rhythmic external signal strong enough and consistent enough to entrain them.

This is the mechanism behind:

  • Music reducing heart rate in clinical settings
  • Binaural beats altering brainwave states credible
  • The 110 Hz resonance in ancient chambers shifting EEG patterns — See Ancient Structures as Resonators
  • Drumming in shamanic traditions producing trance states — the drum frequency entrains the brainwave toward theta credible

It is also the mechanism behind the risk of synthetic frequency environments. If your biology entrains to natural rhythm when exposed to it — it also entrains to synthetic rhythm when immersed in it.

The question of what your nervous system is being entrained to — by the music you listen to, the screens you sit in front of, the electromagnetic environment you live inside — is not abstract. It is biological. theory — but built from verified components.

The Solfeggio Frequencies

A set of frequencies used in Gregorian chant and claimed to have specific healing properties. The primary frequencies cited:

  • 396 Hz — releasing fear/guilt
  • 417 Hz — facilitating change
  • 528 Hz — DNA repair (most claimed)
  • 639 Hz — relationships
  • 741 Hz — awakening intuition
  • 852 Hz — returning to spiritual order

The honest position:

The historical use of these frequencies in Gregorian chant is documented. The mathematical relationships between them are real. The specific healing property claims — particularly 528 Hz and DNA repair — are widely circulated online with very limited peer reviewed support. One study (Rife, 2011) suggested 528 Hz reduced ethanol toxicity in snails. This does not confirm DNA repair in humans.

Tag these claims as investigate until significantly stronger research exists. The frequencies are real. The specific therapeutic claims need more rigorous study. Do not overclaim this section. The vault’s credibility depends on the distinction.

As A Musician

You already know this. Not from research — from inside the experience.

The moment a frequency locks in. The moment a chord progression shifts something in the room. The moment a song finds the exact pocket and the whole body responds before the mind has processed what happened.

That is entrainment. That is cymatics in real time. That is 70% water reorganizing itself around a frequency pattern.

You have been working with this your entire life. The research just gives it a name.

What this vault adds: the frequency you are working in, the tuning you choose, the acoustic environment you create or perform in — these are not aesthetic decisions only. They are biological ones.

A musician who understands frequency is not just making art. They are building an environment for the human nervous system to exist inside of.

That is a serious responsibility. And a serious power.
