Sound as Weapon

verified credible theory

Folder: 02 - THE MANAGED Source note: SRC - Sound as Weapon

The Starting Point

If sound organises matter — if frequency is the operating system of biological systems — then sound is also a tool of disruption and destruction.

This is not theoretical. Sound has been used as a weapon in documented military and law enforcement operations across six continents. The physics that makes music healing makes sound harmful at sufficient intensity and the wrong frequency.

This note documents what is verified what is credible and where the claims end — because this topic attracts significant overclaiming that the vault must not repeat.

The Spectrum of Acoustic Weapons

Acoustic weapons span three frequency categories:

Infrasonic — below 20 Hz: Below human hearing threshold. Felt as pressure and vibration rather than heard as sound. Long wavelengths — 5 Hz has a wavelength of 68 metres — penetrate walls and physical barriers with minimal loss.

Audible — 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz: The range humans hear. The LRAD operates here. Maximum discomfort engineered at 2,000–4,000 Hz — the range human hearing is most sensitive to.

Ultrasonic — above 20,000 Hz: Above human hearing threshold. Focused beams used in medical imaging. At extreme intensities can cause tissue heating. #verified (physics)

LRAD — The Documented Weapon

The Long Range Acoustic Device is the best documented acoustic weapon in current deployment.

Origin: Developed after the October 12 2000 terrorist attack on the USS Cole in Yemen — 17 US sailors killed when a small boat laden with explosives approached the ship undetected. The US Navy needed a way to warn or deter approaching vessels at long range. verified

What it does: Produces a focused beam of sound — approximately 30 degrees wide — that can project intelligible voice communication over 8,900 metres or emit a high-frequency deterrent tone engineered to be maximally painful to the human ear.

The tone is designed to transmit sound at 2,000–4,000 Hz — the frequency range where human hearing is most sensitive — while focusing that beam with the precision of a spotlight. verified

Maximum output: 160 decibels. For context:

  • 75 dB: the NIH threshold for potential hearing damage
  • 100 dB: causes pain
  • 130 dB: jet engine at 100 feet
  • 160 dB: LRAD maximum output

Police models generate 137–154 dB. Both exceed the threshold for permanent hearing damage. verified

Documented deployments against civilians: verified

The LRAD was first used against American protesters at the 2009 G20 Summit in Pittsburgh. An observer suffered permanent hearing loss. The city of Pittsburgh settled the resulting lawsuit in 2012.

Subsequently deployed against:

  • Occupy Movement protesters — Oakland and New York 2011
  • Standing Rock pipeline protesters — 2016
  • Women’s March — Washington DC 2017
  • Black Lives Matter protesters across 14+ US cities in 2020 including Ferguson New York Portland Seattle Louisville Columbus Charleston and others
  • Parliament protesters — New Zealand 2022
  • Anti-vaccine mandate protesters — Canberra Australia 2022
  • Protesters in Belgrade Serbia — March 2025

Used in over 100 countries and 500 US cities per Genasys (manufacturer) own documentation. #verified

Documented injuries: verified

  • Permanent hearing loss (multiple confirmed cases)
  • Severe tinnitus
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Nausea and dizziness
  • Facial pressure
  • Ear ringing persisting months after exposure

The manufacturer — Genasys Inc. formerly LRAD Corporation — maintains the device is a communications tool not a weapon. US courts have ruled otherwise.

In 2017 the Second Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that NYPD’s use of the LRAD against BLM protesters in 2014 constituted excessive force. verified

In 2021 the NYPD settled a lawsuit and agreed to ban use of the alert tone in crowd control. #verified

The honest legal status: The ACLU recommended in 2020 that LRAD use in protests be suspended pending adequate safety studies. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association stated LRADs can cause serious and permanent hearing loss. Despite this the devices remain in active use with minimal federal oversight or standardised training requirements. verified

Infrasound — The Honest Account

Infrasound is the most overclaimed topic in acoustic weapons research. The honest version requires separating what the physics shows from what the popular narrative claims.

What is verified: verified

At sufficient intensity infrasound produces documented biological effects:

  • Vestibular effects: dizziness nausea balance disruption
  • Auditory effects: pressure sensation in the middle ear annoyance
  • Visceral effects: chest tightness breathing difficulty
  • At 140 dB: sufficient to cause harm to the human body
  • At 150 dB for 2–3 minutes: potential for irreversible damage
  • At extremely high intensities: low-frequency sonar exposure can cause cavitation hypothermia and tissue shearing (documented in animal studies)

A 2025 PMC narrative review documented that high-intensity infrasound at 20 Hz and 163 dB causes cochlear damage in animals. At 8 Hz and 90–130 dB infrasound affects intracellular calcium concentration in hippocampal neurons — the same calcium efflux mechanism documented by Dr. Adey in MKUltra research. verified

The honest counterargument: credible

After almost ten years of research the US Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Program stopped funding infrasound weapon work for lack of “a reliable repeatable bio-effect with sufficiently high infrasound amplitude at a minimum specified range.”

Military Medicine published a review concluding: “it seems unlikely that high-intensity acoustic energy in the audible infrasonic or low-frequency ranges can provide a device suitable for use as a nonlethal weapon.”

Physicist Jürgen Altmann reviewed the evidence and concluded infrasound “does not have the alleged drastic effects on humans.”

The honest position: Infrasound at extreme intensities — well above ambient levels — produces documented biological effects. The popular claim that infrasound at conversational levels can be used to incapacitate populations or cause involuntary effects is not supported by the peer reviewed literature.

The “brown note” — a specific frequency that causes involuntary defecation — has no scientific support. MythBusters tested it at extreme levels and found no effect. Air is an inefficient medium for transferring the necessary energy to internal organs.

We do not overclaim infrasound. The verified effects at extreme intensities are significant enough without exaggerating them. verified (extreme intensity) investigate (ambient levels)

Vic Tandy and the Ghost Frequency

In the 1990s physicist and engineer Vic Tandy was working late in a laboratory in Coventry. He felt increasing unease. He saw a vague grey apparition in his peripheral vision. He felt cold and disturbed.

He was not haunted. He was being infrasounded.

Investigation revealed a newly installed extractor fan was generating infrasound at 18.9 Hz — close to the resonant frequency of the human eyeball (approximately 18–19 Hz). The infrasound was causing the eyeballs to vibrate slightly producing visual distortion in peripheral vision and a feeling of profound unease.

When the fan was adjusted the apparition and the unease disappeared.

Tandy published this in the Journal of the Society for Psychical Research in 1998 and subsequently demonstrated the same effect at other “haunted” locations. credible

The implications: some reported paranormal experiences may have physical acoustic explanations. And the frequency at which a human being begins to see things that are not there is close enough to the Schumann Resonance range to be worth noting — without overclaiming the connection.

Music as Psychological Warfare

The documented use of music as a psychological weapon is one of the most consistent threads in modern military history. #verified

Vietnam War: The US military played haunting psychological sounds through loudspeakers to demoralise North Vietnamese forces — a program called Operation Wandering Soul. Ghost tapes of distressed ancestors speaking to soldiers were played at night in the jungle. Designed to exploit Vietnamese beliefs about spirits of the unburied dead.

Waco Siege 1993: The FBI played distressing music and sounds — including Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots Are Made for Walking” Tibetan chants and recordings of rabbits being slaughtered — 24 hours a day outside the Branch Davidian compound. Including during periods when 25 children toddlers and infants were inside.

Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo: Loud music played continuously for extended periods as an interrogation and stress technique. Red Hot Chili Peppers Metallica Barney the Dinosaur theme. Documented in detainee testimony and military records.

Panama 1989: During Operation Just Cause US forces played loud rock music outside the Vatican embassy where Manuel Noriega had taken refuge. The Vatican protested.

The US military has a documented multi-decade practice of using sound — specifically music at extreme volumes and frequencies engineered for maximum distress — as a tool of psychological warfare and interrogation. verified

The Waco Acoustic Assault

The Waco siege deserves specific attention in this note because it demonstrates the deliberate use of acoustic weapons against children.

25 children — many of them toddlers and infants — were inside the Branch Davidian compound throughout the FBI’s acoustic assault.

The FBI applied the same sound campaign to them as to adults. Continuous distressing sounds. Day and night. For weeks.

The Stone Report — submitted to the Deputy Attorney General — criticised the FBI’s failure to differentiate their acoustic tactics when children were present.

This is not about whether the Branch Davidians were right or wrong. It is about whether a government agency deliberately subjected children as young as infants to acoustic stress techniques in a siege situation.

The answer is documented: yes. verified

The Connection to This Vault

Sound as weapon is not a separate topic from the vault’s central thesis. It is the thesis applied in its most extreme form.

Frequency & Vibration documents that frequency organises matter and drives biological processes.

Ancient Structures as Resonators documents that ancient builders understood how to use acoustic frequency to alter consciousness.

MKUltra documents that the CIA spent decades researching how to use electromagnetic frequency to modify behaviour.

Havana Syndrome documents that a directed energy device — using pulsed radio frequency — was used against specific human targets causing documented brain injury.

Sound as weapon is the kinetic application of the same physics. The same principle that makes music healing makes sound harmful when weaponised.

The difference between a healing frequency and a weapon is not the physics. It is the intent and the power.

The Scale Question

The LRAD is deployed openly. Its use is documented and litigated. There is a public record.

The questions this vault holds — without answering prematurely — are about scale.

If a handheld device can produce focused sound that causes permanent hearing loss and neurological effects at 500 metres — what does the next generation of that technology look like?

If infrasound at specific frequencies causes eyeball vibration and profound psychological unease at ambient levels — what does deliberate deployment of those frequencies in an urban electromagnetic environment look like?

If the US military has a documented multi-decade practice of using sound for psychological warfare against enemies — at what point does that technology get turned inward?

The COINTELPRO documentation in The Pattern of Revelation confirms the answer to the last question is not theoretical. The FBI used acoustic harassment techniques against domestic political targets during COINTELPRO.

These are questions. Not answers. Not conspiracy. Documented questions that the evidence raises.

I. The Observer holds them open.
