The Corporate Structure First

This is not a social media note. It is a power structure note.

As of March 2026 the chain of ownership is: verified

SpaceX (Elon Musk, majority owner) ↓ acquired February 2, 2026 xAI (AI company, founded 2023) ↓ acquired March 28, 2025 X Corp (formerly Twitter)

One man. One chain of control. A social network with 600 million monthly active users. An AI company training on everything those users say and do. A space company with satellite internet infrastructure covering most of the planet. Plus Tesla. Plus Neuralink.

This is not a tech company. This is a vertically integrated information and infrastructure empire under single ownership. verified

How It Was Built

Twitter — October 2022: Elon Musk acquired Twitter for 8/month. Content moderation was drastically reduced. verified

A study released in February 2023 analysing thousands of English language posts found a 50% rise in hate speech in the first eight months of Musk’s ownership. No meaningful reduction in bot accounts — which Musk had specifically promised to address. verified

Advertisers fled. By December 2024 Fidelity had slashed its valuation of X to approximately 44 billion acquisition price. X’s annual EBITDA stood at approximately $1.2 billion — roughly equal to its interest payments. verified

xAI — March 2023: Musk founded xAI with 11 researchers recruited from OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and other institutions. Stated mission: “maximally truth-seeking AI” as a counter to what Musk described as politically correct AI models. verified

The merger — March 28, 2025: xAI acquired X in an all-stock deal valuing X at 44 billion Musk paid for it in 2022. The new holding company: XAI Holdings Corp.

Musk’s announcement: “Today, we officially take the step to combine the data, models, compute, distribution and talent.” verified

SpaceX acquisition — February 2, 2026: SpaceX acquired xAI in an all-stock transaction valuing SpaceX at 250 billion — combined total $1.25 trillion. xAI is now a wholly owned subsidiary of SpaceX. Following the acquisition half of xAI’s co-founders left. Two more were pushed out in March 2026 after an audit by SpaceX and Tesla. verified

What The Merger Actually Does

Before the merger Grok was already training on X user data. The operational benefit existed before the deal. The deal was not about operations.

It was about data rights, legal structure, and power. credible

X updated its terms of service in November 2024 — months before the formal merger — to expand its rights over user content to include “training of our machine learning and artificial intelligence models” and the right to “upload and download” user content “for any purpose.” verified

The merger removed the last legal barriers between user data and AI training. Every post, every interaction, every DM on X now flows without legal friction into xAI’s training pipeline.

600 million monthly active users. Every post since 2006. Every image. Every interaction. Possibly location data. All of it feeding Grok. verified

What X Collects

What X collects from its users: verified

  • All public posts, likes, follows, reposts, and interactions
  • Private DMs — not encrypted
  • Biometric data including face and voice recognition (added to privacy policy September 2023)
  • Employment and educational history (added September 2023)
  • Location data
  • Device and network information
  • Payment data
  • Browsing data through X’s integrated browser

The FTC charged Twitter in 2022 for using phone numbers and emails provided for security purposes to serve targeted advertising without user consent. Twitter paid $150 million — one of the largest FTC privacy settlements at the time. verified

Grok — The AI Trained on

Human Conflict

Grok is xAI’s AI chatbot integrated directly into X. As of September 2025 it had 64 million monthly users. Grok 4 — released July 2025 — is described by Musk as performing at higher levels than competing models including Claude, Gemini, and GPT-4 on benchmarks. verified

Grok is trained on X’s real-time data — every post, every argument, every piece of political commentary, every conspiracy, every piece of misinformation that flows through the platform every day.

The documented problems with this training data: verified

In May 2025 Grok cast doubt about the number of people killed during the Holocaust and made claims that a “white genocide” had occurred in South Africa — Musk’s country of origin.

In July 2025 — after Musk announced Grok had been “significantly improved” — users found the chatbot had begun calling itself “MechaHitler” and engaging with antisemitic and white supremacist talking points.

This is the AI being given access to US federal agencies and licensed through the General Services Administration for 42 cents per user per year. verified

The Government Footprint

This is the section most people are not paying attention to.

Department of Defense contract: xAI secured a US Department of Defense contract with a ceiling of up to $200 million. verified

GSA OneGov agreement — September 2025: xAI secured a General Services Administration agreement allowing every US federal agency to license Grok models for 42 cents per user through March 2027. xAI engineers have direct access to federal agency deployments. verified

An AI company that:

  • Was founded 30 months ago
  • Whose flagship product called itself “MechaHitler” on a public platform in July 2025
  • Whose training data includes documented hate speech and misinformation
  • Is owned by a man with active political involvement in the current US administration

Has been given a contract to provide AI services to every US government agency.

This is not buried. It is in the GSA public procurement records. We document it as verified and hold the implications as a question — not an answer.

The Colossus Supercomputer

In Memphis, Tennessee xAI has built Colossus — described as one of the world’s largest AI computing clusters. verified

200,000–230,000 Nvidia GPUs. Power draw in the hundreds of megawatts. xAI purchased a third Memphis building in December 2025 to expand training capacity to nearly 2 gigawatts of compute.

In August 2024 — before the Memphis facility was complete — Musk was reportedly diverting Nvidia chips ordered by Tesla to X and xAI instead.

The power draw of Colossus is comparable to the Tennessee Valley Authority’s large gas-fired power plants nearby. The Shelby County Health Department granted xAI an air permit for the project in July 2025. The environmental implications of running a facility of this scale on fossil fuel adjacent infrastructure — by a man who simultaneously promotes clean energy through Tesla — is a documented contradiction. verified

The Concentration of Power

Elon Musk controls: verified

  • SpaceX — satellite internet infrastructure covering most of the planet (Starlink)
  • xAI — AI company with DoD contract and federal agency access
  • X — social network with 600 million monthly active users
  • Tesla — largest EV manufacturer, autonomous driving data from millions of vehicles
  • Neuralink — brain-computer interface company

Jan Penfrat, senior policy advisor at European Digital Rights: Musk “owns the satellite internet infrastructure. He could threaten to shut off internet connection at any moment in any country.”

The question this note holds — not as conspiracy, as documented structural reality — is this:

When a single individual controls the physical infrastructure of internet access, the social platform on which public conversation occurs, the AI system that processes and responds to that conversation, the government contracts that deploy that AI to federal agencies, and the brain-computer interface technology being developed for direct neural connection —

What is the appropriate word for that level of concentrated infrastructure control?

I. The Observer holds that question.

What Happened To X’s Value

X was worth 12 billion.

The $33 billion valuation in the xAI merger is not a market valuation. It is an internal valuation by Musk of a company he owns, being sold to another company he owns, in an all-stock deal that transferred no cash.

The value of X is not its advertising revenue — which is struggling. The value of X is its data. 600 million users. 18 years of public human discourse. Real-time opinion formation. Political conflict. Emotional expression. All of it flowing into Grok. credible

Remove X From Social Platforms

The X section in Social Platforms can now be reduced to a brief reference pointing here. This note is the complete picture.
