What Meta Actually Is

Meta is not a social media company. It is the world’s largest surveillance advertising operation embedded into daily civilian life through products people use to connect with each other.

Advertising accounted for 98% of Meta’s total revenue in 2024 — 164.5 billion total.

The products are free. You are the product. verified

Meta owns:

  • Facebook
  • Instagram
  • WhatsApp
  • Messenger
  • Threads
  • Meta Quest (VR headsets)
  • Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses
  • Meta AI

One privacy policy. One unified data ecosystem. A thousand ways to track you. verified

The Three Invisible Hooks

These operate across the entire internet — not just Meta’s platforms.

1. The Meta Pixel verified A small piece of code embedded on approximately 30% of all websites on the internet. When you visit any site carrying the Pixel — a lawyer’s website, a medical page, a car dealership, a news article — the Pixel reports your visit to Meta instantly.

This happens whether you have a Facebook account or not. This happens when every Meta app is closed. This happens when you think you are browsing privately.

The EFF confirmed: Meta’s tracking tools are embedded in millions of websites and apps — you cannot escape Meta’s surveillance simply by avoiding or deleting its apps.

2. Software Development Kits (SDKs) #verified Many free apps — games, weather apps, fitness trackers, period trackers — are built using Meta’s free development tools. The price of those free tools is data. Apps built with Meta SDKs report user behaviour back to Meta including location data, health metrics, usage patterns, and device information.

You gave none of these apps permission to share your data with Meta. You agreed to it in terms and conditions written to be unreadable.

3. Conversions API (CAPI) verified Traditional tracking happens on your device — you can attempt to block it with browser settings or VPNs. CAPI operates server to server. The retailer’s computer talks directly to Meta’s computer without touching your device. There is no consumer level defence against this.

Facebook

The original platform. Still the largest with approximately 3.3 billion monthly active users globally. verified

Facebook derives 98% of its revenue from advertising. It has been fined for violating privacy regulations more than any other social media platform: four times under GDPR in the EU, once in the US, and five times in other jurisdictions. #verified

Facebook Messenger now has default end-to-end encryption as of December 2023 — a genuine improvement. Group chats with businesses and Marketplace chats remain unencrypted. Meta may collect content from those. #verified

Instagram

Instagram tracks: verified

  • Every post you stop scrolling on and for how long
  • Every profile you visit even without following
  • Every DM
  • Camera and microphone access patterns
  • Off-platform activity through the Pixel and SDKs

The algorithm is not designed to show you what you enjoy. It is designed to maximise time on platform and emotional engagement. Outrage, desire, insecurity, and fear drive more engagement than contentment.

Instagram knows what makes you insecure. It uses that knowledge to keep you scrolling. It sells that knowledge to brands who want to sell you the solution to the insecurity Instagram helped amplify. credible

The End-To-End Encryption Reversal

verified

Meta announced in March 2026 that end-to-end encrypted messaging on Instagram will no longer be supported after May 8, 2026.

The stated reason: low adoption. “Very few people were opting in to end-to-end encrypted messaging in DMs, so we’re removing this option.”

The actual story is more layered. Platformer reported that the low adoption rate was of Meta’s own creation — the feature was buried behind four taps and menus and was never advertised or set as default. Meta built a feature, hid it, watched it go unused, then cited its own hiding of it as justification for removal.

Matthew Green, cryptographer and professor at Johns Hopkins University, flagged publicly that Meta previously conducted a human rights impact assessment in 2022 that found expanding end-to-end encryption “supports a range of fundamental human rights.” That commitment is now being reversed.

When Instagram’s encryption ends on May 8, 2026, Meta will regain the technical ability to scan and act on the content of every DM — reopening the door to automated content scanning, AI training, ad personalisation, and compliance with law enforcement requests.

Meta’s direction of users toward WhatsApp for encryption is noted. WhatsApp message content is encrypted. Everything else flows to Meta. See the WhatsApp section below.

WhatsApp

WhatsApp has 2 billion monthly active users globally. Its end-to-end encryption on messages is genuine and technically verified. verified

What is not protected:

Metadata — who you talk to, when, for how long, from where, how frequently — is fully harvested by Meta. The content of your messages is private. The map of your relationships, communication patterns, and social network is not. verified

The Accounts Center problem: If you link your WhatsApp account to your Facebook or Instagram account through Meta’s Accounts Center, Meta explicitly states it combines data from all linked accounts to build a more complete profile of you. This is in their own privacy policy. #verified

Meta AI on WhatsApp: As of December 2025, interactions with Meta AI on WhatsApp are used to personalise ads across Facebook and Instagram. If you do not interact with Meta AI on WhatsApp, your data is not used for AI development per Meta’s policy. The opt-out is not interacting with Meta AI at all. verified

The honest position on WhatsApp: For private message content: genuinely protected by encryption. For everything else — your relationships, your patterns, your location, your device — you are inside the Meta surveillance ecosystem. Signal is the alternative. Meta AI — The New Frontier

verified

As of December 2025 Meta updated its privacy policy to explicitly state that conversations with Meta AI are used to personalise ads and content across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

This applies in nearly every region globally. Exceptions: EU, UK, and South Korea — where GDPR and equivalent regulations prevent it.

What this means practically: if you ask Meta AI about health concerns, relationship problems, financial stress, or major life decisions — those conversations are now signals in your advertising profile.

Meta AI appears in the search bar, comments section, and direct messages across its platforms. It is being placed where you naturally type to encourage interaction. Every interaction is data.

The Pay-For-Privacy Model —

Ruled Illegal

verified

In November 2024 Meta introduced an ad-free subscription service in the EU: €5.99/month on web, €7.99 on mobile. Users could pay to avoid personalised advertising.

In April 2025 the European Commission formally ruled that this model violates both GDPR and the Digital Markets Act. The ruling: the model does not provide a legally valid alternative to consent because it forces users to either pay for their fundamental right to privacy or accept invasive surveillance. Privacy behind a paywall is not consent. It is coercion.

This is only illegal in the EU. In the US and most of the world it remains legal. The model reveals the valuation Meta places on your data: a few euros a month. The actual revenue per user it generates from your data is significantly higher. credible

Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses —

The Physical World Layer

verified

Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses — wearable cameras with built-in Meta AI — represent the extension of Meta’s surveillance infrastructure from the digital world into physical space.

In October 2024 two Harvard students published a demonstration showing that the glasses could be used to identify strangers on the street by cross-referencing live camera feeds with publicly available data — pulling names, addresses, and phone numbers from people’s faces within seconds.

The students called the project I-XRAY. They published it to demonstrate the risk, not to deploy it.

The technology they used is not hidden. It is the combination of a wearable camera, facial recognition, and publicly available data — all accessible to anyone with the glasses.

This is the physical world layer of The Planetary Nervous System.

The EU vs The Rest

verified

Meta has been fined under GDPR more than any other platform. The EU has repeatedly found Meta in violation of fundamental privacy rights.

The EU has GDPR. The US has no equivalent federal privacy law. Meta’s most aggressive data practices — the ones ruled illegal in Europe — operate freely in the United States and most of the world.

The legal architecture that protects Europeans does not protect you unless you are in Europe.

The Honest Summary

Meta built the most comprehensive civilian surveillance infrastructure in history by making its products the primary place humans connect with each other. The switching cost is not financial. It is social. Your relationships are inside their system. That is the lock-in.

A 2025 survey by Usercentrics found 62% of consumers feel like “the product” when using digital platforms. They are correct. They have always been correct. The difference is now more people know it. verified

The question I. The Observer holds: at what point does the most accurate predictive model of a human social network become indistinguishable from control of that network?

What You Can Do

verified

  • Keep WhatsApp and Facebook / Instagram accounts separated — do NOT link them in Accounts Center
  • Do not interact with Meta AI on any platform
  • On Instagram: Settings → Security → Apps and Websites → Remove all connected third party apps
  • Use Instagram through Safari on iPhone not the native app
  • Never use Facebook Login for other apps or websites
  • Use Firefox with uBlock Origin on desktop — blocks the Meta Pixel
  • For private messaging: use Signal See Social Platforms
  • See Digital Privacy & Protection
