The Pineal Gland
Folder: 01 - THE NATURAL Source note: SRC - The Pineal Gland
What It Is
The pineal gland is a small endocrine organ located in the geometric centre of the human brain. It weighs approximately 150mg — the size of a grain of rice. It is present in all vertebrates and in some form in nearly all living organisms. verified
René Descartes called it “the principal seat of the soul and the place in which all thoughts are formed.” That was 1649. We did not discover its actual biological function until 1958.
What we found when we looked: something that justifies both the scientific attention and the ancient reverence.
What It Does
The pineal gland’s primary documented function is the synthesis and secretion of melatonin — the hormone that governs the body’s circadian rhythm, the 24-hour biological clock that regulates sleep wake cycles immune function reproductive timing and the coordination of virtually every physiological system in the body. verified
Melatonin is released in response to darkness and suppressed by light. The pineal gland is the body’s primary interface between the external light environment and the internal biological clock.
It does not just regulate sleep. Melatonin is:
- A potent neuronal antioxidant — protecting brain cells from oxidative damage
- An anti-inflammatory agent
- A regulator of immune function
- Implicated in the prevention of neurodegenerative disease
- A modulator of bone metabolism and sex hormone timing
- Released directly into the cerebrospinal fluid — meaning its primary delivery to the brain is through the same fluid system documented in Cerebrospinal Fluid & The Glymphatic System verified
An intact and functional pineal gland is necessary for preserving optimal human health. That is not editorial. That is the conclusion of a peer reviewed PMC paper. verified
The Calcification Problem
The pineal gland has the highest calcification rate of any organ or tissue in the human body.
A systematic review published in PMC examining cross-sectional studies on human populations found a pooled prevalence of pineal gland calcification of 61.65%. verified
More than six in ten people have a partially calcified pineal gland.
Calcification means calcium deposits — called corpora arenacea or brain sand — form within the pineal tissue. As calcification increases the number of active pinealocytes (the cells that produce melatonin) decreases. As pinealocytes decrease melatonin production decreases.
This relationship has been confirmed by MRI and CT studies correlating the volume of uncalcified pineal tissue with 24-hour melatonin output in urine. The larger the uncalcified portion the more melatonin is produced. The more calcified the less. verified
Calcification is associated in peer reviewed literature with:
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Parkinson’s disease
- Autism spectrum disorders (abnormal melatonin synthesis documented)
- Circadian rhythm disruption
- Sleep disorders
- Accelerated aging
- Neurodegenerative disease generally verified
Calcification is a natural process of aging. The question is why it is happening earlier and more extensively in modern populations than the biology would predict.
Fluoride — The Honest Account
This is the section requiring the most careful tagging in the note.
What is verified: verified
The pineal gland is located partially outside the blood-brain barrier — unlike most brain tissue. This means substances that cannot enter the brain through normal channels can reach the pineal gland through the bloodstream.
Due to this exceptional vascularisation and its unique location the pineal gland accumulates fluoride at concentrations far exceeding any other tissue in the body.
The pineal gland is the most fluoride-saturated organ in the human body. verified
Fluoride has a strong chemical affinity for calcium — specifically for hydroxyapatite crystals which are the form calcium takes in pineal calcification. Fluoride does not itself calcify the gland. It accumulates in the existing calcium deposits.
Studies have found a positive correlation between the level of fluoride in the pineal gland and the degree of calcium accumulation. High pineal fluoride is associated with high pineal calcification. verified
Jennifer Luke’s landmark 1997 study — the first to specifically examine fluoride in the human pineal gland — found fluoride concentrations in pineal tissue of 296 mg/kg on average. For comparison: fluoride in bone averages 2,000 mg/kg and in teeth approximately 5,000 mg/kg. Pineal fluoride was significantly elevated above other soft tissues. verified
Animal research: a 2019 PubMed study found that aged rats on a fluoride-free diet for 8 weeks showed a 73% increase in the number of pinealocytes compared to control animals on fluoridated water. When fluoridated water was reintroduced the benefit was reversed. #verified — in rats
The honest counterargument: credible
One well-sourced dental review states plainly: “Fluoride does not calcify the pineal gland. Calcium calcifies it. Fluoride accumulates in the hydroxyapatite crystals that are already there.”
The causal chain — fluoride → calcification → reduced melatonin → health consequences — is association-based at standard water fluoridation levels in humans. Most studies showing strong effects used fluoride concentrations significantly above the US standard of 0.7 mg/L — often from countries with naturally elevated groundwater fluoride such as India China and Iran.
A 2021 Canadian study found that fluoride exposure correlated with shorter sleep duration in adolescents and adults. The proposed mechanism: calcified pineal — reduced melatonin — disrupted sleep. It is plausible. The study measured fluoride and sleep — not fluoride pineal function and sleep as a unified chain. It is indirect evidence. credible
The honest position: The pineal gland accumulates more fluoride than any other soft tissue. High pineal fluoride is associated with high pineal calcification. High calcification is associated with reduced melatonin. Reduced melatonin is associated with multiple neurological conditions.
Whether this chain constitutes a public health problem at standard water fluoridation levels is genuinely unresolved in the literature.
The precautionary case for reducing fluoride exposure is coherent and grounded in documented biology. The conspiracy version — that water fluoridation is an intentional plan to calcify the pineal gland and suppress consciousness — is not supported by evidence and overclaims what the science shows.
We hold the documented biology. We do not hold the unfounded conclusion.
See Fluoride for the full water fluoridation note.
DMT — The Most Contested Section
The pineal gland produces N,N-Dimethyltryptamine — DMT. This is documented in peer reviewed literature. verified
DMT is a potent endogenous psychedelic compound. It is also produced in other tissues and organs including the lungs and liver. Whether the pineal gland is its primary source is debated.
What has been suggested in the scientific literature — not proven — is that the pineal gland releases significant quantities of DMT:
- At birth
- During dreaming (REM sleep)
- During near-death experiences
The exact biological consequences of pineal DMT production remain to be clarified. This is the language of the peer reviewed paper itself. investigate
Rick Strassman MD — clinical associate professor of psychiatry at the University of New Mexico — conducted the first approved human DMT research in decades and proposed in his 2001 book DMT: The Spirit Molecule that the pineal gland releases DMT during these threshold states.
This remains a hypothesis. The mechanism for what would trigger such releases — and whether the quantities would be pharmacologically significant — has not been confirmed in controlled studies. credible
The honest position: The pineal gland produces DMT. This is documented. That it produces significant quantities during threshold biological states is a hypothesis proposed by a credentialed researcher and supported by some evidence but not confirmed by controlled studies.
We do not claim the pineal gland floods the body with DMT during dreams. We note that it produces DMT and that the biological significance of this production is an active research question.
The Light Connection
In primitive vertebrates the pineal gland contained photoreceptors that detected light directly. The pineal was literally a third eye — a light-sensing organ sitting at the top of the skull.
In humans and other mammals this direct photoreception has largely been replaced by an indirect system: the retina detects light, signals travel through the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the hypothalamus — the body’s master clock — and the SCN then regulates pineal melatonin release.
But the evolutionary history is significant. The pineal gland is functionally an ancient light receptor — the body’s original interface with the day-night cycle. It retains photosensitive cells. The relationship between light and pineal function is not metaphorical. It is anatomical history. verified
Blue light and the pineal: Artificial blue light from screens suppresses melatonin production by signalling to the pineal — through the retinal pathway — that it is daytime. This suppression is well documented.
See MKUltra for the blue light mechanisms. See The Natural Counter for what restores natural light cycles.
The Ancient Knowledge
Every major ancient tradition that venerated the pineal gland did so before modern neuroscience existed.
The third eye in Hindu tradition — Ajna chakra — is depicted at the centre of the forehead and associated with inner vision perception beyond ordinary sight and access to higher states of consciousness.
The Eye of Horus in Egyptian tradition is anatomically similar in cross-section to the pineal gland and its associated structures — a resemblance first noted by neuroanatomists who compared the two side by side. credible
In Gnostic and early Christian traditions the pineal was associated with the “third eye” of spiritual perception — the seat of the soul as Descartes later restated it.
The convergence: A small organ in the geometric centre of the brain that:
- Responds to light
- Governs the biological clock
- Produces the sleep hormone that cleans the brain
- Produces an endogenous psychedelic
- Has the highest fluoride accumulation of any soft tissue
- Is calcifying in over 60% of the modern population
Was understood by ancient cultures — before any of these biological functions were known — as the seat of inner vision and spiritual perception.
Whether that understanding was symbolic intuition arrived at through meditation and direct experience or literal biological knowledge encoded in spiritual language is the question we hold.
Not as mysticism. As a genuinely open question. theory
The Convergence With This Vault
Everything that disrupts the pineal gland is documented in this vault:
-
Blue light from screens: Directly suppresses melatonin production through the retinal pathway. 7+ hours of daily screen exposure is 7+ hours of pineal suppression. verified
-
Fluoride in water: Accumulates in pineal tissue at concentrations exceeding all other soft organs. Associated with calcification. #verified (accumulation) #credible (functional consequence at standard levels)
-
EMF exposure: A systematic review found EMF from cell phones and devices listed among risk factors for pineal calcification alongside fluoride and herbicides. credible
-
Artificial light at night: Any artificial light during the dark hours signals the pineal to suppress melatonin. The managed world has eliminated genuine darkness from most human environments. verified
-
Chronic stress: Cortisol suppresses melatonin production. The chronic stress architecture of the managed world is a chronic pineal suppressor. credible
A gland the size of a grain of rice in the centre of the brain. Responsible for the hormone that governs sleep immune function antioxidant protection circadian timing and possibly consciousness threshold states.
Calcifying in 60% of the population. Accumulating fluoride like no other soft tissue in the body. Suppressed daily by artificial light.
The pineal gland is not an esoteric concept. It is a documented biological system under documented pressure from multiple documented directions.
