The Starting Point

We were taught that the sun causes skin cancer and should be avoided.

This is partially true and largely incomplete.

For 40+ years public health messaging has focused almost exclusively on the carcinogenic risk of ultraviolet radiation — while a growing body of peer reviewed research documents that the benefits of sunlight extend far beyond vitamin D into every major biological system in the human body.

A large Scottish epidemiological study found that low sun exposure is associated with a risk of death similar to smoking.

Nobody is telling you that.

Professor Richard Weller of the University of Edinburgh — one of the world’s leading researchers on sunlight and health — stated plainly at a May 2024 expert conference in Washington DC: “We know vitamin D only accounts for a tiny proportion of the benefits of sunlight and taking vitamin D tablets does not make up for the lack of sunlight. Current public health advice overlooks the significant health benefits of sunlight.” verified

The Full Spectrum

Sunlight is not one thing. It is a complete electromagnetic spectrum of biological signals that the human body evolved to receive over millions of years.

The components: verified

UVB — 280 to 315 nm: Penetrates the outer skin layers. Triggers vitamin D3 synthesis. Also triggers production of beta-endorphins — natural pain-relieving and mood-elevating compounds independent of vitamin D. Cannot pass through glass.

UVA — 315 to 400 nm: Penetrates deeper than UVB. Triggers nitric oxide release from skin stores — the mechanism behind sunlight’s blood pressure lowering effect. Can pass through glass. Approximately 95% of UV reaching Earth’s surface is UVA.

Visible light — 400 to 700 nm: Enters through the eyes and skin. Regulates the circadian clock through the retinal pathway to the suprachiasmatic nucleus. Red and orange wavelengths penetrate tissue deeply and drive mitochondrial function through photobiomodulation.

Near-infrared — 700 to 1400 nm: Penetrates deepest of all sunlight components — through skin into muscle tissue and organs. Drives photobiomodulation — the stimulation of cellular energy production in mitochondria. Builds EZ water in cells. See Water & Frequency Drives glymphatic clearance. See Cerebrospinal Fluid & The Glymphatic System

Far infrared — above 1400 nm: Absorbed primarily at the skin surface as warmth.

The sun delivers all of these simultaneously in a coordinated biological package the human body evolved to receive. A supplement delivers one molecule. These are not equivalent. verified

Vitamin D — The One Everyone Knows

UVB radiation converts 7-dehydrocholesterol in skin to vitamin D3 which is then processed by the liver and kidneys into the active hormone calcitriol. verified

Calcitriol regulates over 2,000 genes — approximately 10% of the human genome. It governs: verified

  • Calcium and phosphorus metabolism
  • Bone density and formation
  • Immune system regulation
  • Insulin secretion
  • Cardiovascular function
  • Neuromuscular function
  • Cell differentiation and apoptosis (cancer prevention)
  • Brain development in utero and in early childhood

Vitamin D deficiency is associated with: depression autoimmune disease osteoporosis cardiovascular disease multiple sclerosis type 1 diabetes and multiple cancers.

Approximately 1 billion people globally are estimated to be vitamin D deficient or insufficient. #verified

The supplement problem: Multiple large randomised controlled trials and Mendelian randomisation studies have failed to confirm major health benefits from vitamin D supplementation equivalent to the benefits observed from sunlight exposure itself.

The current scientific consensus is that sunlight’s health benefits operate through multiple pathways simultaneously — and vitamin D supplementation only addresses one. The sun cannot be replaced by a pill. verified

Nitric Oxide — The Cardiovascular

Mechanism Nobody Talks About

This is one of the most important and least known findings in sunlight research.

Sunlight — specifically UVA — triggers the release of nitric oxide from stores in human skin. Nitric oxide dilates blood vessels reduces blood pressure and has multiple cardiovascular protective effects. verified

A landmark study by Professor Richard Weller and colleagues found that UVA irradiation of skin significantly lowered blood pressure in hypertensive patients — through the nitric oxide pathway not through vitamin D.

The implications:

  • Sunlight exposure lowers cardiovascular disease risk through a mechanism entirely separate from vitamin D
  • The benefit cannot be replicated by vitamin D supplements
  • Sun avoidance may be contributing to cardiovascular disease burden at population level

Epidemiological studies from the UK and Sweden have found that people with higher sun exposure have lower all-cause mortality lower cardiovascular mortality and lower cancer mortality — not higher. The sun avoidance narrative has been protecting against skin cancer while potentially increasing risk of heart disease stroke and other cancers.

That tension is in the peer reviewed literature. verified

Serotonin and Mood

Sunlight triggers serotonin synthesis in the brain. The mechanism: light entering the retina stimulates the raphe nuclei in the brainstem to produce serotonin regardless of vitamin D status. verified

Serotonin is the primary mood-stabilising neurotransmitter. Low serotonin is associated with:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Impulsive behaviour
  • Seasonal affective disorder

Serotonin converts to melatonin at night — regulated by the pineal gland. The daily cycle of serotonin production during sunlight hours and melatonin production during darkness is the body’s primary chronobiological regulator. See The Pineal Gland

Disrupting the serotonin-melatonin cycle through artificial light at night and inadequate sunlight during the day disrupts the entire circadian architecture of the body. #verified

The Circadian Clock —

Light as Biological Timekeeper

Every cell in the human body contains a molecular clock — a set of genes that cycle through a roughly 24-hour oscillation governing cell function repair division and metabolism. verified

The master clock is the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in the hypothalamus. It is set and reset daily by light entering the retina.

Morning sunlight — specifically the blue-rich light of dawn in the 480nm range — is the primary zeitgeber (time-giver) that synchronises the SCN and therefore every cell clock in the body.

Without natural morning light exposure the master clock drifts. Cell clocks across the body fall out of synchronisation. The result: disrupted sleep hormonal dysregulation impaired immune function metabolic dysfunction and accelerated aging. verified

The circadian disruption epidemic in modern populations is directly linked to inadequate morning sunlight and excessive artificial light at night. Both are products of the built environment of the managed world.

Photobiomodulation —

The Mitochondrial Connection

This is the most significant recent development in sunlight research and connects directly to the vault’s frequency work.

Photobiomodulation (PBM) is the stimulation of biological processes by specific wavelengths of light — particularly red (630–700nm) and near-infrared (700–1100nm).

These wavelengths are absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase — the terminal enzyme in the mitochondrial electron transport chain — the engine of cellular energy production.

When red and near-infrared light are absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase: #verified

  • ATP (cellular energy) production increases
  • Reactive oxygen species balance is modulated
  • Nitric oxide is released from the enzyme
  • Cellular repair mechanisms activate
  • Inflammation reduces

This is not alternative medicine. Photobiomodulation is used clinically in wound healing traumatic brain injury treatment and pain management. Over 5,000 peer reviewed studies have been published on it. verified

A 2020 PubMed review proposed that photobiomodulation — not vitamin D — may be the primary mechanism explaining why sun exposure is associated with lower all-cause mortality.

Natural sunlight delivers abundant red and near-infrared light. Indoor lighting delivers almost none. A population spending 90%+ of its time indoors — under LED and fluorescent lighting that strips out red and infrared wavelengths — is a population chronically deprived of the light frequencies that drive mitochondrial function.

The managed world built an indoor environment that filters out the very wavelengths that power the cell’s energy engine. credible

The Frequency Connection

The sun is not just a heat source. It is the primary broadband frequency source for all life on Earth — emitting across the entire electromagnetic spectrum from gamma rays to radio waves with a peak in the visible and near-infrared range.

Life evolved inside this full spectrum signal for billions of years.

Every system documented in this vault that evolved in sunlight is calibrated to its frequencies:

The circadian clock is set by 480nm blue light at dawn. Serotonin is triggered by visible light through the retina. Vitamin D is synthesised by UVB at 290–315nm. Nitric oxide is released by UVA at 315–400nm. Mitochondria are activated by red and near-infrared at 630–1100nm. EZ water in cells is built by infrared at 700nm and above. See Water & Frequency

Blocking the sun is not just a temperature intervention. It is an intervention in the broadband electromagnetic environment that every living system on Earth is calibrated to.

This is why the vault treats Stratospheric Aerosol Injection (SAI) as one of the most significant managed world interventions documented here. It is not just climate management. It is frequency management of the entire biosphere.

The Immune System Beyond Vitamin D

Sunlight affects immune function through multiple vitamin D-independent pathways: verified

  • UVR directly affects immune cell activity and distribution
  • UVR modulates the skin microbiome and gut microbiome through systemic immune pathways
  • UV exposure reduces systemic inflammation markers
  • Higher sun exposure is associated with reduced severity of multiple sclerosis type 1 diabetes childhood eczema and multiple autoimmune conditions

The UV-immune connection appears to be a vitamin D-independent pathway operating through direct effects on immune cell subsets and cytokine production.

A large Scottish study found that higher UVB exposure during pregnancy was linked to lower risk of learning disabilities in children — and this effect was larger than could be explained by vitamin D alone. verified

The Balance

The vault states this honestly because the research demands it.

Ultraviolet radiation is a Group 1 human carcinogen — classified by the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer. This is not disputed. UV radiation causes DNA damage that leads to skin cancer in susceptible individuals. verified

The honest position held by leading researchers including Weller is not “ignore skin cancer risk.” It is “the balance between benefits and risks of sun exposure has been significantly misrepresented in public health messaging.”

No studies link sun exposure to increased all-cause mortality. Multiple large epidemiological studies link sun exposure to reduced all-cause mortality.

Sun avoidance protects against skin cancer — a usually treatable cancer — while potentially increasing risk of cardiovascular disease depression autoimmune conditions and neurodegenerative disease.

The managed world built sun avoidance into public health policy while simultaneously building an indoor environment that makes sun avoidance the default. The result is a population chronically deprived of the broadband frequency environment it evolved inside of.

Practical

What the research supports: verified

  • Morning sunlight within the first hour of waking — even 5–10 minutes — sets the circadian clock and drives serotonin production
  • Direct sunlight on skin without sunscreen for the time it takes to produce a slight pinkness — varies by skin type and latitude — is the threshold for meaningful vitamin D production
  • Avoid peak UV hours if fair-skinned and prolonged exposure — not because sunlight is the enemy but because burning is the problem
  • Sunlight through glass does not produce vitamin D — UVB cannot pass through glass
  • Artificial red and near-infrared light panels (photobiomodulation devices) can partially compensate for indoor deprivation of these wavelengths — documented clinical benefit credible
